One year after hurricane Maria …

written by Bartek October 2, 2018

Exactly one year ago Bartek was struggling with upcoming hurricane Maria, one of the most intense Atlantic hurricanes on record. We didn’t know the scale of the hurricane until it came to shore and we needed to protect our house, so Bartek did! We were so lucky. Eventually it turned south and didn’t hit Dominican Republic where our home stayed. The wind in the marina was really strong, but nothing serious happened, our Poly and Bartek were safe. Few months later we visited some islands hit by Irma and Maria…. Saint Martin and amazing Dominica. The scale of devastation was heartbreaking. There is an episode we made about Saint Martin available at our yt and in next few days we will publish the video of Dominica. We visited our local friends and talked to them ogave as much support as we could ….

And below some facts:

Hurricane Maria was the tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide. Maria is regarded as being the worst natural disaster on record to affect Dominica and Puerto Rico. At its peak, the hurricane caused catastrophic damage and numerous fatalities across the northeastern Caribbean, compounding recovery efforts in the areas of the Leeward Islands already struck by Hurricane Irma.

Maria is the deadliest hurricane in Dominica since the 1834 Padre Ruíz hurricane, and the deadliest in Puerto Rico since the 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane

3,057 people were estimated to have been killed by the hurricane: an estimated 2,975 in Puerto Rico, 65 in Dominica, 5 in the Dominican Republic, 4 in the contiguous United States, 3 in Haiti, 2 in Guadeloupe, and 3 in the United States Virgin Islands.

Total losses from the hurricane are estimated at upwards of $91.61 billion (2017 USD), mostly in Puerto Rico, ranking it as the third-costliest tropical cyclone on record.

Below there is an episode of How Irma devastated Caribbean Island in just few hours – Saint Martin
